POPPIES
12" x 12" Acrylic on Canvas
by Margie Whittington

The project for our acrylic class was painting poppies
on a textured surface. First we applied gloss medium
to the canvass and placed a piece of crumpled
white tissue paper on the canvas. Another coat of
medium was spread over the tissue. A coat of gesso
was applied then we started painting. A wash of colors
was painted on the dried canvas and spritzed with water and
held upright to let the paint run down and through
the crevices made by the crumpled tissue paper
creating an abstract under painting. Finally
when the wash was dry, we drew our poppy compositions and
painted the poppies, stems and buds.
Here is how some of the paintings in class turned out.
